In den Japanisch-Sprachkursen an meiner Uni lernt man im ersten Semester genau 0 Kanji. In den folgenden 4 Semestern lernt man insgesamt ein paar hundert Kanji, wenn ich mich richtig erinnere. Ich habe zu Beginn einen Uni-Sprachkurs "Japanisch 1" belegt, der 4 SWS hatte. Die Sache bei Japanisch ist, dass man neben einigen Vokabeln auch viele Kanji (die Schriftzeichen) kennen muss, um z. B. ein relativ einfaches SNES-Spiel wie "Chrono Trigger" zu verstehen. 5 Jahren Uni-Sprachkursen ein paar hundert Kanji und einige Wörter und kann wahrscheinlich immer Wenn du motiviert bist, kannst du meiner Erfahrung nach autodidaktisch viel effizienter lernen als in einem Sprachkurs, vor allem wenn Lesen und Hörverstehen deine Hauptziele sind.
